Making strong work with a strong heart - Katangku kuruntu kulira kunpu palyanma.
Tjanpi Desert Weavers' vision is to improve the lives of NPY women and their families by supporting cultural activity, income generation and employment through the creation of fibre art. At its core, Tjanpi embodies the energies and rhythms of the country, culture and community, empowering 400 women across a 350,000 square kilometre area of the tri-state region of NT, SA and WA.
Tjanpi sculptures are made from a combination of native desert grasses, seeds and feathers, commercially bought raffia (sometimes dyed with native plants), string and wool.
Nungawarra Ward was born on Ngaanyatjarra Lands in WA, and now lives in Warakurna surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Nungawarra began weaving with Tjanpi in 2015 and her baskets are characterised by brightly coloured raffia and high sides, creating strong sold shapes.
