Bunjil - Mariah Briggs
Bunjil - Mariah Briggs 158-20
Work on Paper
112x75
Mariah Briggs depict the Creator Bunjil and his dingos, as represented on a cave wall at Gariwerd (The Grampians). This rock art site is significant because it is the only known depiction of Bunjil as a man, where he is usually seen as a wedge-tailed eagle.
Mariah Briggs has used ochre and charcoal on cotton rag paper. Earth pigments (ochre) have been collected from Gariwerd and the Mornington Peninsula.
Gariwerd is a highly significant cultural site being the home to about 75% of Victoria’s rock art.
Mariah Briggs is a member of @balukarts which is an Aboriginal art centre based in Mornington, Victoria.
These are powerful works and perfect for hanging in a school or other community environment where the intention is to acknowledge and celebrate Victorian Aboriginal culture.
