This painting is a depiction of a Jawun (biocornual basket), a multi use hand woven basket made by Traditional Owners of the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland. The basket is unique to the region, Australia and the world.
The term jawun is a Girramay language name. Jawun are still being made today from later cane (Calamus Australis) which is found only in the rainforest regions and is harvested, split and woven into this unique form and style.
