Tingari at Patjantjanya - John Tjapaltjarri

Acrylic on Canvas 1992

60 x 36 inches.

The rock hole site of Patjantjanya, south-west of Lake MacDonald, is represented in this painting. In mythological times the Tingari Men travelled to this site before continuing their travels north east to Kintore. Events associated with the Tingari Cycle are of a secret nature therefore no further detail was given.

Generally, the Tingari are a group of mythical characters of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping particular sites.

The Tingari Men were usually followed by Tingari Women and accompanied by novices and their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles.

These mythologies form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youth today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.

John Tjapaltjarri was born at Patjantjanya in the Lake MacDonald region, circa 1941. He commenced painting in 1976.
