Tarkul Tingari Cycle - George Tjampu Tjapaltjarri
Acrylic on Canvas, 122 x 61 cm

This painting depicts designs associated with the rock hole site of Tarkul, north of Mt Webb in Western Australia. In mythological times, an old Tingari Man camped at this site before travelling north east to Malparinya and Lake Mackay. While at Tarkul, he made a wirra ( a wooden scoop made for digging).
Since events associated with the Tingari Creation Cycle are of a secret nature, no further detail was given. Generally the Tingari are a group of mythical characters of the Dreaming who travelled over vast stretches of the country, performing rituals, creating and shaping particular sites.
The Tingari men are usually followed by Tingari women, and accompanied by novices. Their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These mythologies form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youths of today, as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs. (copyright Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd).
