Bagu by Nancy Cowan

Limited Edition Screen Print, $350

Based on the traditional fire making implements of the Girrigun Rainforest Aboriginal people, the artists have created artworks made from clay, timber and string to evoke the spirit of the old people.

Traditionally, the fire sticks were made up of two parts, the Bagu (body) and the Jiman (sticks). The bags form was founded in the shape of a man. The spirit design was created with traditional clays and the ochre colours are magera yellow, jillian, black with wallaby blood and garbage white.

In this screen print, Nancy has captured the visceral feeling of the Bagu with its firelighting qualities, an important part of surviving in a rainforest environment.
