"From England to Australia and on to Brazil and America, I have been a traveler of the world since a young child. Always creative and artistic, I first became interested in photography at the age of 15. This lead to studying bachelor of fine art in San Francisco with a major in photography and installation, which I completed in Coventry, UK in 1995.
From darkroom to digital photography, landscapes to portraits, I have explored the vast possibilities of the amazing medium of photographic art, eventually finding my place in photo journalism and live concert photography.
I see photography as a medium to share elements of the world that the viewer may never have encountered or seen, encouraging them to step into realities beyond their own lives and connect with the existence of others. Through my photographs I aim to narrate stories with integrity and candour, inviting questions and personal interpretations whilst evoking intimate thoughts, reactions and emotions to each image as well as the collection as a whole." - Sam Gummer
"This photographic collection is a portrayal of the life in the community of Yuendumu, where I have been working and living for the past year.
I originally came to Yuendumu to help the most inspirational woman, Gloria Morales, with her dog program, Aussie Desert dogs. The dog program started over 15 years ago and has changed the health, wellbeing and care of the dogs in the community, as well as educating the residence of the town on animal care and responsibility. Remarkably Gloria has achieved all this whilst working as the assistant manager of Warlukurlangu Artists!
Observing the cultural relationship between Warlpiri people whilst living in the community and working at Warlukurlangu Artists has presented me with the unique opportunity to experience the intimate dynamics of the inhabitants, art, and culture of a remote Aboriginal community. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to photograph such a vibrant and diverse environment. " - Sam Gummer
